Deadline for change passes but the need for new law remains

Thirty-six years ago today I walked through a set of gates which would change my life forever.

Among the thousands of excited faces around me in the spring sunshine were 97 people whose lives would be taken within the hour.

The ones I knew personally were just children, unlawfully killed in an unimaginably horrific way on a day when they should simply have been enjoying a football match.

The catastrophic decision to open those gates still reverberates almost four decades later.

Last year Sir Keir Starmer set today as the date by when a Labour government would bring new legislation before Parliament for a so-called Hillsborough Law.
