Can you hear me mother? This summer I had silent treatment
Lancashire Evening Post

C'mere, there's more from the Post's funniest columnist
-
I recently got a letter from my Mammy over in Ireland. In it, she said she'd just got a new hearing aid and since getting it she's heard from my uncle Charlie in Australia.
Remembering that little joke from my Mammy helped cheer me, because to be honest readers, it's been a challenging summer health-wise.
It reminds me of the classic comedy from the 1930s, Can You Hear Me Mother? - although in my case, it's nothing to do with being landed with an unexpected baby, as screen star Sandy Powell* did in the movie!
It all started at the end of June, when I caught a virus which included an ear infection which led to a hearing loss.
Anyone reading this who has suffered the same fate will know how scary it is; suddenly you're in a world where everybody is whispering - but they're not really.
They're just talking normally but to you they're whispering.
I wish I had a penny for every time I said to someone "What was that?" or 'I didn't quite catch that!"
Of course, after a while you learn to bluff your way through by smiling agreeably and pretending you've heard every word.
