Kashmiri Voters Are Still Waiting

APRIL 7, 2026 ISSUE

Jammu and Kashmir’s recent budget session has left many people asking a simple question: what did this mandate deliver.

- Raqif Makhdoomi

The National Conference came to power with a historic win. Voters, especially young job seekers from the unreserved category, rallied behind its promise to rationalize reservations. That promise propelled the election. It helped turn support into a sweeping victory.

Two years later, that promise still waits for action.

A committee was formed and given six months to submit its report. Two years have passed and there is no report in sight. The delay has shaken trust among those who backed the party with hope and conviction. Many feel their support was taken for granted.

The Assembly has also shown signs of strain within the ruling party. Public disagreements between its own members have played out in full view.
