J&K Bans ColdRif, 2 Other Cough Syrups

The Jammu and Kashmir Drug & Food Control Organisation (DFCO) has banned the sale, distribution, and use of three cough syrups, including ColdRif, after they were found "Not of Standard Quality" by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) due to the presence of toxic Diethylene Glycol (DEG) impurities.
The CDSCO, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, reported that DEG levels in the syrups exceeded permissible limits. DEG is a toxic compound known to cause severe poisoning, including kidney failure and multi-organ damage, and has been linked to child deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
