Food Insecurity, Drying Rivers Stare Kashmir In The Face

RINAGARKashmir is teetering dangerously on food insecurity as precious paddy land shrinks by conversion to rain-fed orchards and climate change wreaks havoc with rivers, reducing their level by two-thirds over the past forty years, a recently conducted study says.

Kashmir's current 40 per cent food grain deficit is likely to touch over 60 per cent in the next 10 years, a report on climate change released here Monday said. The ActionAid International, an NGO working in over 40 countries, in a 28-page report on climate change and its impact in Kashmir, 'On the brink’ said that more and more paddy land is being changed into rain-fed orchards resulting in the food grain deficit.
