In Mayo JOHN O'SULLIVAN found a county teeming with stories which are told by welcoming locals...

When the Wild Atlantic Way is mentioned, many people will talk about west Cork, Kerry, Connemara, and Donegal, some of the most popular stops on the stunningly scenic driving route that snakes up the western flank of Ireland.

However, the northern coast of Mayo, whether in spring, summer, autumn, or winter, has a history and natural beauty to match any of those frequently-visited tourism hotspots.

With the shorter evenings and the enticing aroma of burning turf in the air, the town of Belmullet is an ideal place to visit and unwind in an area that is as historically significant as it is beautiful.

Perched on the sea, the Broadhaven Bay Hotel offers hearty food, spacious and comfortable rooms with gorgeous views, all at an affordable price point. Its location, too, is ideal with plentiful taxi drivers available to bring visitors into the town itself, which is scarcely a two-minute drive away.

Stopping in at the Western Strands bar and restaurant is a treat for all the senses. Beautifully prepared local produce - the steak was superb - set the scene for a raucous live music session, with locals and tourists alike contributing to the welcoming atmosphere.

For those who enjoy being pampered, a quick trip to the Ice House Hotel in the neighbouring Ballina is the idyllic stress reliever. Their extensive spa has treatments to suit all tastes and their outdoor seaweed baths, which overlook the River Moy, provide the ultimate in relaxation, especially in the 'off season' months where the inviting warmth of the baths contrast with the cold weather.
