Street player Troy a credit to Dublin's north inner city

IT HAS been a fantastic week for irish football and it's not over yet.

We may be going to the World Cup in the USA next summer.

Nobody expected when we set out on this that we would be in this position. We didn't have an established team.

What we had was a lot of young players, a new coach, and a team where there was no room for Troy Parrott and Seamus Coleman. How quickly things change.

But who could have predicted that they would change as drastically as they have done over these past few wonderful, unforgettable days? The great discovery of these games is Parrott who, of course, we've known about for a long time now, despite the fact that he is still only 23.

Parrott has always been a really classy player, but his career needed a revival and that's just what it got when he was brave enough to leave England for the Dutch Eredivisie.

He knew he had to leave Spurs to realise his huge potential. And now with five goals in two international games - and a hat-trick yesterday - he won't ever be forgotten within Irish football circles.

Parrott is a history maker.

There aren't many who can claim to have a competitive hattrick. And now he is the only man who can boast an away one.

It will be a long time before an Ireland team is picked and he - when fit and available - isn't in it.
