SCENES OF THE CRIME

THE CRIME SCENE - 3 GRATTAN STREET, YOUGHAL, CO CORK Bouquets of flowers sat in front of the brown door of number 3 Grattan Street this week - as jurors deliberated their verdict.

SCENES OF THE CRIME

In the window of the four-storey, century old property, located next to Youghal Credit Union and just metres from the pier, was a fitting pictorial tribute to Tina Satchwell.

Nail polish and other beauty items sat next to her picture, giving anyone who passes by a brief glimpse of the life that was stolen from her.

The house on Grattan Street now lies empty, nearly two years on from the garda operation which saw the place searched from top to bottom for several days.

It was here where Tina should have felt safest where she was murdered after returning from a car boot sale with her husband Richard on Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Her crude shallow grave under the stairs remained hidden for over six years. Killer Satchwell told gardai that he killed his wife there on the morning of March 20, claiming he first dragged her remains into a freezer in the back garden shed.

He then buried her in a two-foot grave where officers found Tina still in her dressing gown and wrapped in black plastic sheeting.

The couple moved to house in September 2016, having lived in Fermoy, where she had many family and friends. Satchwell invited reporters into the home knowing his wife's remains were just feet away.

It was only when a new team of gardai looked at the case again that he became a suspect in 2022.

Off the back of the expertise of a forensic archaeologist, gardai returned to the house for an intrusive search in October 2023.
