David awarded his gong... at last

HE was first considered for the British honour of a knighthood way back in 2014 and today, 11 years on, David Beckham can finally add the “Sir” to his name.

The former England and Manchester United player, who was given an OBE in 2003, said he was “immensely proud” to receive the knighthood in today’s King’s Birthday Honours List for his services to sport and charity.

In a statement, he said: “Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.

“To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.”

David has been a goodwill ambassador for Unicef for two decades and recently celebrated his 50th birthday.
