Treaty City joins Europe-wide drive to reach net zero

Going out on a Lim' for climate

A THIRD Irish city has joined a growing Europe-wide push to become climate-neutral within the next few years.

Limerick has now been announced as a twin to Tampere in Finland under the EU's ambitious NetZeroCities plan.

The initiative aims to create up to 100 emission-free cities across Europe by 2030.

Dublin and Cork had already been declared as among those first selected for the programme.

And now Limerick has been added as a "twin city" to shadow and learn from the experience of Tampere, with an emphasis on making its transport carbon-free.

The Treaty City became the first city in Ireland to have a mayor directly elected by voters when John Moran took the chain of office last year.

"Limerick, like other cities across Ireland, Europe, and indeed the globe, is rightly putting a greater focus on sustainability and the need for climate-resilient infrastructure than ever before," he said.
