Deployment of troops still needs clarity

FURTHER safeguards and clarity are needed in the Government's draft laws to change Ireland's system for deploying troops abroad, the Oireachtas Defence committee has recommended.

Social Democrats TD Sinead Gibney said the committee's proposals were "highly significant", as it showed that many Government TDs remained unconvinced of the arguments put forward to dismantle Ireland's "triple lock" system.

She said this was a core pillar of Ireland's neutrality.
