John, 59, kept in filthy jail before assault acquittal

AN Irish grandfather and engineer is trapped in Dubai, destitute and facing a travel ban after being jailed but later acquitted after a disagreement with a security guard.

John Murphy, 59, from Limerick, was kept in filthy, cramped conditions in Al Wathba jail, where he developed post-traumatic stress before he was found innocent and released seven years ago.

While in prison, his landlord sued him for nonpayment of rent, seized his possessions, and had a travel ban imposed.

Mr Murphy has been unable to leave Dubai since. He also lost his job after being wrongly jailed and has struggled to survive without income.

He had been living in a bus station in Rashadiya, Dubai, in recent months.
