Fake SEBI documents, nomadic operation: How ex-banker from Andhra led share trading racket before Gurgaon police pull plug

The Gurgaon cyber police, on June 1, arrested a former banker from Andhra Pradesh and four others for allegedly running a share trading racket during a raid at a hotel in Punjab’s Zirakpur.The accused have been identified as Chinta Manoj Kumar, 38, a former HDFC Bank manager from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh; Gurvinder and Ravi from Jind, Haryana; Rohit Kumar from Hisar, Haryana; and Akshay from Una, Himachal Pradesh.

The five allegedly swindled at least Rs 5 lakh from a woman by luring her into share trading investments with promises of high profits using fake Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)-registered company documents. The accused also provided mule bank accounts to cyber fraudsters, according to the police. On March 18, the complainant reported to the Gurgaon cybercrime police station (west) that on January 13, 2025, she received a WhatsApp message with a link from an unknown number. The accused allegedly sent emails and forged SEBI documents to gain the victim's trust, convincing her to install a mobile app. Through the app, the victim was allegedly persuaded to make multiple transactions, resulting in financial loss.A team supervised by Priyanshu Dewan, Assistant Commissioner of Police (cybercrime), investigated the case and made the arrests.
