Super League heading for a 'train crash', says V'landy's

PETER V'landy’s has stated that the Super League competition is heading for a ‘train crash’ in its current guise.

The chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission has listed two reasons why and it all centres on governance and finance.

V'landy’s believes the competition's move to increase to 14 teams is a financially irresponsible one, with promoted clubs taking a cut on the central distribution handed out from the sport's broadcast deal with Sky.

The NRL administrator has also stressed the need for change in corporate governance, with an independent body required to lead the competition. Currently, major Super League decisions, such as the one to increase from 12 to 14 teams, are left to the clubs themselves.

V'landy’s comments come as the NRL chief, along with Andrew Abdo, met with leading owners - Wigan's Mike Danson, Warrington's Simon Moran, and Hull FC's Andrew Thirkill - in London on Tuesday.

Talks on a partnership between the NRL and Super League have been ongoing for months, with the NRL reportedly interested in investing in purchasing a stake in Super League.
