IT'S a thrilling story of hope and optimism from behind the bars of a maximum-security prison that's touched the hearts of millions.

Now, the acclaimed stage production of The Shawshank Redemption, based on Stephen King's 1982 novella and blockbuster film, heads to Hull New Theatre from 21-25 October.

We caught up with lead characters Joe McFadden, Ben Onwukwe, and Bill Ward to discuss their roles and inspiration for joining the show.

Joe McFadden plays Andy Dufresne, who despite protests of his innocence is handed a double life sentence for the murder of his wife and her lover.

He said: "It's such a well-known story and he's such an iconic character, and some might say that's foolish to take on.

"But it feels like a good challenge for me as an actor, and I do like a challenge.
