Plans for a new marina near Beaumaris look set to be revied. Aerial view of the Anglesey fortress town

HOPES for new housing, a marina, sports, leisure, commercial and community facilities to be built at a former secret World War II aircraft factory site near Beaumaris have been raised again.

Beaumaris town councillors have long pushed for the development of the former industrial site at Llanfaes, known locally as Laird’s.

Previous plans to build a multi-million pound marina at Gallows Point in Beaumaris were sunk over a decade ago by a court ruling in favour of local mussel fishermen. This followed a long-running battle over a proposed 450 berth site on the Menai Strait.

They have been working to try and get a plan for the largely derelict site, which sits beside Fryars Bay, to be accepted into the Anglesey County Council's Local Development Plan.

Speaking at a Beaumaris Town Council meeting, Cllr Alwyn Rowlands said that several members of the council, including the Mayor Stan Zalot, had been moving things forward. He told the meeting: “We have, for some time, been looking at the development of the Lairds site and to get it accepted into the Local Development Plan.
