Texts, confession of co-accused led to MLA's conviction

Telephonic conversations, text messages, and a confession by a key accused — all this, and more, led to a Punjab court on Saturday sentencing Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Naresh Yadav to two years in prison in connection with the alleged desecration of the Quran in 2016.
Responding to Yadav's conviction, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) urged Delhi assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel to revoke the AAP MLA's membership.
The AAP did not comment on the matter.
The incident in question occurred on June 24, 2016, when torn pages of the Quran were found scattered on a road in Malerkotla, Punjab. This led to violence and the burning of vehicles by an angry mob, and four people — including Yadav, the Mehrauli MLA — were arrested in connection with the case.
