Temple razed during east Delhi anti-encroachment drive

The Public Works Department (PWD) on Monday undertook an encroachment removal demolition drive in East Delhi's Geeta Colony, under which a portion of a local temple and nearby shanties were razed down amid heavy police deployment, officials said.

The demolition was part of the government's drive to clear arterial roads of encroachment and widen them. It comes a day after similar action was taken on Rani Jhansi road, where a section of 250-year-old mazar (shrine) and a temple were demolished.
During the drive on Monday, a 44 square metre-portion of the temple located at Labour Chowk in Geeta Colony. "The demolition proposal was already approved by the Delhi government's Religious Committee that looks into all such matters," said a government officer aware of the matter.
