Sarma, Priyanka get EC notices for 'code breach'

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday issued show-cause notices to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly violating the model code of conduct by making "communally charged" comments and "false claims", respectively, in poll-bound states. The poll panel has asked the leaders to respond by October 30.
The ECI notice to Sarma was issued in connection with his remarks targeting Chhattisgarh minister Mohammad Akbar, while Priyanka Gandhi received it over her "envelop" remarks related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's temple visit during her poll campaign in Rajasthan.
The model code of conduct is in force in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Mizoram, where polling for the assembly elections will be held on different dates in November.
