No farm loan waivers in Maha for two years

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar announced Friday that the state government will not waive farm loans for at least two years, making it the second major election promise to be abandoned by the ruling Mahayuti alliance due to fiscal constraints.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis endorsed Pawar's statement on Saturday, saying, "Whatever stand is taken by Ajitdada is the stand of the state government." Fadnavis also noted that Pawar had not completely ruled out a future waiver.
Pawar, who also serves as the state's finance minister, made the announcement in his home-town of Baramati. "Today is March 28 and I am asking everyone to repay their farm loans. You mustn't assume that everything you've been promised will become a reality," Pawar told an audience comprised mainly of farmers.
