Centre concerned over Jadavpur death, UGC asked to act: Pradhan

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday attacked the West Bengal government over the recent death of a first-year-student of Jadavpur University (JU), saying chief minister Mamata Banerjee "cannot escape responsibility" and must thoroughly probe the incident that has sparked brutal allegations of ragging on the campus.

Pradhan also said that the Centre has taken the case pertaining to the student's death and allegations of ragging "seriously", and that he has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to take the strictest action as per law.
Thirteen people-six current and seven former students have been arrested in connection with the death of the 17-year-old student, from Nadia district, who was found lying naked in a pool of blood in front of the main hostel building outside the university campus by students at around 11.45pm on August 9.
