Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday pointed to the challenges being faced by the Parliamentary bodies and underlined the need to work for enhancing the dignity of the Houses of the people's representatives to make them more accountable to the people.

PATNA: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday pointed to the challenges being faced by the Parliamentary bodies and underlined the need to work for enhancing the dignity of the Houses of the people's representatives to make them more accountable to the people.

He said that the falling number of sittings of the legislatures was also a matter of concern, as was the growing practice of disruptions and adjournments. "It was a challenge in 1954 and it is still a concern," he added.

He was speaking at the 85th All India Presiding Officers Conference (AIPOC) at the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Extension building in Patna. Bihar is hosting the event for the third time only, the last time being in 1982. Speakers of legislative assemblies, chairpersons of legislative councils and the secretaries from all the states are participating in it.

The conference will conclude on Tuesday.
