A rare liver disease in West is common in citizens of Bihar

PATNA: Two cases of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS), a rare disorder in the West that occurs when blood flow out of the liver is obstructed, causing blood to pool, leading to liver damage and other complications, were detected in patients at Patna's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Wednesday, said its doctors.

As many as 72 cases of Budd-Chiari syndrome, having an annual incidence of 0.2 to 0.8 per million in western countries, have already been detected during the last three years at AIIMS, pointing to the fact that its cases are on the rise and common in Bihar, a study by AIIMS has revealed, said Dr Rajeev N Priyadarshi, professor and head (HoD), department of radiodiagnosis at AIIMS, Patna, and the research guide.
