Inability to govern': Oppn slams Manipur Prez Rule
Hindustan Times Noida
|February 14, 2025
Opposition parties on Thursday termed the Union government's decision to impose President's Rule in the ethnic strife-torn Manipur a "very delayed" move and a "belated admission" by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of its "complete inability" to govern in the state, and accused the NDA-led Centre of destroying democracy in the northeastern state.
NEW DELHI:
The statements came as the state assembly was put under suspended animation, days after chief minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post that led to political uncertainty in the state, which has been rocked by strife between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 3, 2023.
"The imposition of President's Rule in Manipur is a belated admission by the BJP of their complete inability to govern in Manipur," Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote in a post on X.
"Now, PM Modi can no longer deny his direct responsibility for Manipur. Has he finally made up his mind to visit the state, and explain to the people of Manipur and India his plan to restore peace and normalcy?" he asked.
Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said the Centre has imposed President's rule, something his party has been demanding for last 20 months, only after the fabric of the state's society was allowed to be "severely damaged".
