Over two weeks after eight people got trapped inside the partially collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana, rescue agencies managed to retrieve the body of one of them from under 10 feet of silt, officials aware of the matter said on Sunday.
NAGARKURNOOL:
Eight people — engineers and labourers — got trapped on February 22 when a portion of the roof collapsed at the SLBC tunnel in Nagarkurnool district, approximately 120km from Hyderabad. Rescue teams were forced to use fishing rafts, tyres, wooden and bamboo planks to navigate through the flooded tunnel.
According to officials heading the rescue operation, the body was extricated after "very careful" digging and other efforts for more than 48 hours.
"A body was removed from inside the SLBC Tunnel, which was found during the morning hours. The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a native of Punjab, and the body has been shifted to the PME at Nagarkurnool General Hospital for post-mortem examination and to follow other procedures," an official part of the rescue operations told ANI.
