Centre to buy cotton at MSP without any limit

The Centre will ramp up purchases of cotton at federally fixed minimum support prices or MSP to cushion domestic farmers from falling local rates, following the government's decision to waive duty on imports of the fibre to maintain competitiveness of the domestic apparel sector, which is bracing for the impacts of the Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian exports.

Already, farmers are battling price pressures because textile manufacturers prefer to import cheaper short-staple fibre due to higher domestic rates. On
