Bonn Climate Meetings Open to Shape Critical Finance Agenda

The June Climate Meetings in Bonn opened after several hours of delay on Monday.

NEW DELHI: There were several differences over the agenda, especially among the developed and developing country coalitions.

According to observers, developing countries pushed for an agenda item on implementation of Article 9.1 of the Paris Agreement, which states that developed countries "shall provide financial resources to assist developing country Parties".

A negotiator said that the discussion on proper implementation of this article is definitely not on the current agenda in Bonn and should be included. Some developing countries also sought an agenda on discussing unilateral trade measures, according to observers. These discussions delayed the opening.

"Without the UN-convened climate multilateralism, we would be headed for up to 5°C of global heating. Now it's around 3°C," UN climate chief, Simon Stiell, warned parties on Monday at the opening of the meeting, which acts as a midway point before the annual climate conference (COP30) scheduled to take place in Belem, Brazil this November.
