Amid Delhi judge row, Dhankhar alludes to NJAC
Hindustan Times Navi Mumbai
|March 22, 2025
Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday referred to the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), saying the issue of judicial accountability would have been addressed if the mechanism, passed with near-unanimity in Parliament, had not been struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2015.
NEW DELHI:
After Congress leader Jairam Ramesh raised the issue of cash being found at the residence of a Delhi high court judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, the vice president, without naming the NJAC legislation, said: "That historic legislation endorsed by this Parliament with unprecedented consensual support unknown to Parliamentary history of this country dealt with the malaise very severely. If the malaise had been dealt with, perhaps we would not have countenanced such kinds of issues. What bothers me is that the incident happened and did not immediately surface."
