Structural audit of high-rise, ageing bldgs on cards

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) will soon begin structural audits of all high-rise buildings across the city.

They include the ones constructed by the LDA and also that private developers have built. The move follows recent approval from the state cabinet and a prior resolution passed in the LDA board meeting.

Confirming it, LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar said audits will be carried out in compliance with the new building byelaws. “We will get all high-rise buildings regardless of whether they belong to LDA or private developers structurally inspected by the empanelled agencies. This is to ensure the safety of residents and prevent any future tragedies,” Kumar added.

According to officials, a high-rise building defined as being 50 metres or taller typically comprises 12 to 16 floors. Lucknow already has over hundreds of such structures. The LDA has identified several buildings developed over a decade ago that are now in poor condition and in urgent need of evaluation.
