At 34, Zohran Mamdani, son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, has become New York's youngest, first Muslim, and first person of South Asian descent Mayor.

A GLOBAL DESI MOMENT

In his victory speech, Zohran quoted India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence speech, Tryst with Destiny: “A moment comes, but rarely in history.” As he concluded his own speech, Dhoom Machale (Dhoom, 2004) played in the background, a clip of which went viral on social media.
