Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and party legislator Madan Mitra sparked a controversy on Saturday after seemingly blaming the 24-year-old law student gangraped in south Kolkata, prompting the ruling party to immediately dissociate itself from its leaders' statements.

"Security is there. But if a friend rapes a friend, how can you provide security? If the incident takes place inside a college campus, how can the police be present there? Should the police be present inside an educational institute? ..." Banerjee said on Friday.
