Sangam waters brought to 75 UP jails, prisoners take dip of faith

Several thousand prisoners participated in the "Astha ka Snan" (bathing of faith) event by taking a dip in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam in special tanks or "haudis" and small pools prepared for the bathing ceremony on the premises of 75 jails across Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning.

LUCKNOW: Several thousand prisoners participated in the "Astha ka Snan" (bathing of faith) event by taking a dip in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam in special tanks or "haudis" and small pools prepared for the bathing ceremony on the premises of 75 jails across Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning.

The special event coincided with the ongoing Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj.

Senior jail officials said all the interested inmates were allowed to take a dip in holy waters of the Triveni Sangam across the U.P. jails. Currently, U.P. jails house nearly 90,000 prisoners, including convicts and undertrials.

The event was organised after U.P. jail minister Dara Singh Chauhan decided to replicate the Unnao district jail initiative where 800 out of 1,066 prisoners bathed in the Sangam waters arranged by the jail administration on January 16. Taking a cue, the minister organised the Friday's event to provide an opportunity to prisoners, who could not visit the Mahakumbh to take a dip in the Triveni Sangam waters.
