A professor at Delhi University's Ramjas College—accused of sexual harassment by a student in December—stepped down on Wednesday from his role as the Joint Dean of Students' Welfare at DU.

- Aditi Agrawal

NEW DELHI:

The professor told HT that he resigned by emailing vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh. However, it remains unclear if the resignation has been accepted.

"Due to these allegations, I am finding it extremely challenging to continue my additional duties as Joint Dean, Students' Welfare, University of Delhi. In light of these circumstances, I kindly request your consideration...to ensure that the functioning of the office is not compromised," he wrote in his resignation letter.

DU registrar Vikas Gupta said, "I have no knowledge of this," while the V-C declined to comment.

The professor had been suspended from teaching for six weeks after a complaint was filed with Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in late December.

Denying any wrongdoing, he said the case was a "conspiracy" linked to academic disagreements.

Earlier, members of Students' Federation of India (SFI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed during protests demanding stricter action.

Stanzin Deskyong, vice president of the Ramjas Students' Union, alleged, "Protesters were beaten with sticks and flowerpots."

The ABVP denied involvement, claiming they were also protesting the professor's suspension.

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena empowered at least 23 senior Delhi Police officers to issue "takedown orders" to social media companies and other intermediaries in order to remove illegal content under the Information Technology Act, according to a gazette notification issued on December 26.

The Delhi Police has been designated as the "nodal agency" of the NCT of Delhi to perform these functions, the notification states.

Ignored Sarfaraz to not move up the batting order

Gearing up for a fresh Ranji season with an eye on bigger personal honours is what Sarfaraz Khan has done a lot of. Being constantly on the waiting list is also something he's learned to deal with. It may have led to frustration, but it never broke him. To lose favour after making it to the elite level can be deflating though and will test the resilience of the middle-order batter.
