Modi: National security policy an extension of Bhagavad Gita

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday presented India's national security doctrine as an extension of the Bhagavad Gita's teachings, arguing that the country's modern response to terrorism and external threats draws from a long civilisational understanding of duty, justice and deterrence.

Addressing a gathering in Udupi, he said the government's recent actions, including Operation Sindoor, the response to the Pahalgam terror attack, reflects a strategic shift toward firm retaliation.

Modi opened his remarks by invoking the battlefield origins of the Gita. "This is the land where Sri Krishna gave the Gita's message on a battlefield," he said. "The Gita teaches us that to establish peace and truth, it is sometimes necessary to end those who commit atrocities."

He framed India's current policy as a balance between compassion and force -- a duality he linked to the country's long standing philosophical traditions.

"We speak of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family)," he said. "But we also repeat the mantra Dharmo rakshati rakshitah (those who protect righteousness are protected). From the Red Fort, we give the message of Krishna's compassion, and from that same Red Fort, we announce Mission Sudarshan Chakra." His reference was to a defence shield he announced in his Independence Day speech this year.
