Timeline of events Five months after the suspected rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata shook the nation, the Sealdah court on Monday pronounced its verdict in the case. Events leading up to the conviction:

- HT Correspondent

KOLKATA: The parents and colleagues of the 31-year-old resident doctor who was raped and murdered at the West Bengal government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata welcomed the conviction of prime accused Sanjay Roy by a city court on Saturday, but said they are still awaiting others involved in the crime to be arrested and punished.

"We are confident that more suspects will be arrested and the trial will continue. There is no reason to feel disheartened. The judge said today (Saturday) that he will hold a hearing on other aspects (of the crime) on Monday," the victim's mother told reporters after Roy was held guilty by the Sealdah court.

Additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das convicted Roy, a civic volunteer of Kolkata police, of raping and murdering the on-duty postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run hospital on August 9 last year, over five months after the crime that sparked nationwide outrage and led to prolonged protests by medics.

The court will announce the quantum of punishment on Monday, the judge said.

Seeking death penalty for Roy, the victim's father said: "This is only the first step towards justice. We are grateful to the judge. But there are other culprits who are still outside and we will continue to fight for justice."

Ignored Sarfaraz to not move up the batting order

Gearing up for a fresh Ranji season with an eye on bigger personal honours is what Sarfaraz Khan has done a lot of. Being constantly on the waiting list is also something he's learned to deal with. It may have led to frustration, but it never broke him. To lose favour after making it to the elite level can be deflating though and will test the resilience of the middle-order batter.
