SC asks if voters dropped over citizenship

THE QUESTION PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON ARGUMENTS MADE BY PETITIONERS WHO QUESTIONED EC'S AUTHORITY TO DETERMINE CITIZENSHIP
The Supreme Court examining the validity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls on Thursday asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to state whether any voter has been removed on the ground of “suspected citizenship”, putting the spotlight on the arguments made by petitioners who have questioned the poll panel's authority to determine citizenship.
During the course of arguments made by the ECI in response to these petitions, a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the SIR exercise seeks to weed out dead, duplicate and migrated voters from the roll and these criteria do not involve citizenship as a ground.
