Employment, tea gardens focus of Assam budget

Assam finance minister Ajanta Neog on Monday presented a ₹2.63 lakh crore budget for financial year 2025-26, the last full budget of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government ahead of next year's assembly polls, making a slew of announcements, including monetary aid to jobless graduates and tea garden workers.

In her fifth budget speech in the assembly, Neog said no new tax has been proposed for the general public, keeping up with the trend of the incumbent government in the last four years.
The Assam government intends to spend ₹2.60 lakh crore in 2025-26, which is 8.1% less than the ₹2.82 lakh crore it spent in 2024-25 as per the revised estimates presented in this year's budget. The 2024-25 RE numbers are lower than the budget estimate spending of ₹2.87 lakh crore in the last budget.
