U'khand forest dept starts creating waterholes in Haridwar jungles

With the onset of summer, the forest department has started constructing waterholes within forested areas of Haridwar district.

HARIDWAR: Wild animals quench their thirst at these waterholes and prevent them from straying towards the Ganga, Ganga Canal and nearby residential zones in search of water, officials aware of the matter said on Monday.

As natural water sources dry up during the summer months, wild animals often venture into human settlements. To curb their movements and restrict wildlife within forest boundaries, the department is working on creating alternative water sources, they added.

"Many natural water bodies dry up during summer. We are arranging medium-sized waterholes and reservoirs, so that wild animals can find sufficient water within the forest itself," ranger of the Shyampur forest range Mahesh Sharma said, adding that four waterholes have already been constructed in the Anjani and Pili Parav areas.
