They say elite footballers’ children are rarely as successful in the sport as their parents. But look around. It isn’t true

- Rudraneil Sengupta

Tough acts to follow

A couple of weeks ago, two brothers had a showdown.

The stage was the Derby d'Italia, the storied rivalry between two giants of Italian football: Inter Milan and Juventus. The brothers were Inter striker Marcus Thuram and his younger sibling Khephren Thuram, fast becoming Juventus's go-to holding midfielder.

They are the sons, incidentally, of football legend Lilian Thuram, one of the greatest defenders of his generation.

On the day of the face-off, Lilian was in the stands, and what an emotional roller-coaster ride it must have been for him. Both men scored within minutes of each other, in a thrilling match of fluctuating fortunes. A few days later, they were playing together for France in a World Cup qualifier.

Watching the face-off unfold, I was struck by how deeply and how frequently sporting success runs through families.

Pakistan army, Pasni port, and a sell-out to America

It makes little strategic and commercial sense for Washington to invest ina project in Balochistan. For the transactional US president, the numbers just don’t add up. They look even worse now as the war at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border heats up

The ugly Indian and other stories of racism

I was asked an interesting question last week: Are Indians racist? It was prompted by a news report which reads: “A 27-year-old flight attendant from Meghalaya has alleged that she was recently subjected to verbal racial abuse twice within an hour in Delhi — once in north Delhi’s Kamala Nagar, then on the Metro.”

SC flags alarming delays in enforcing legal orders

In a stark reminder of the chronic delays in enforcing court decrees, the Supreme Court has revealed that over 882,000 execution petitions remain pending across district courts in the country, lamenting that such staggering pendency makes the very purpose of a court decree meaningless and “a travesty of justice”.
