Heavy rain, hailstorm cause roadblocks, damage crop in Uttarkashi and Kumaon

The continuous heavy rainfall and hailstorm have led to crop damage and road blockages since past one week in various parts of the state especially Uttarkashi district and Kumaon region, officials familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

According to the district emergency operations centre, reports of crop damage and road blockages were reported near Dobata and Kharadi due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm since Wednesday evening. The teams from revenue department were rushed to the spot on the directions of district magistrate to clear the road of debris and restore traffic without any delay.

"The revenue department officials have been directed to assess the crop damages due to hailstorm in the affected areas." Uttarkashi district magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht said. He also Wednesday evening issued directives to tehsil-level officials and staff to remain on high alert. The DM instructed that obstructed roadway be cleared promptly to restore traffic and deployed revenue department teams to affected areas to assess crop damage.

Brijesh Tiwari, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Barkot, said that traffic was resumed after the clearance of debris by the executing agencies at the affected areas on Yamunotri Highway near Kharadi and Dobata on the Yamunotri National Highway. He also confirmed hailstorms in Geeth Patti, Ojri, Thakral, Uparadi, and Kanseru caused partial crop damage and revenue teams were assessing the damage.
