NEVER WANTED TO COME IN CINEMA, I WAS IN LOVE WITH BOOKS: GULZAR

Veteran poet, lyricist, and filmmaker Gulzar never imagined a life in cinema. His first love, he says, was always literature. Speaking at an event recently, the 91-year-old opened up about his early aspirations and the unexpected path that led him to films.

"I never wanted to come to the cinema. I didn't want to write for cinema, and I would refuse it. I was in love with the books," Gulzar shares, adding, "I would rather put my name on the books of Vipassana short stories, and see how my name looks on a book. I did watch films, but I didn't love cinema enough to want to become a director. It began only when I joined cinema."
