The ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) on Monday gave its approval on a Maharashtra government's proposal for the creation of a leopard birth control programme, officials familiar with the matter said.
The proposal for the country’s first such initiative was sent to the ministry in January 2024.
According to officials, the pilot will begin in Junnar, a region identified as the epicentre of human-leopard conflict in the state and is one of the most challenging landscapes for big cat management in the country.
