Vijayan defends remarks on Sanatana Dharma

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday stood firm on his statement that spiritual leader and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru should not be seen as a proponent of Sanatana Dharma, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mounted an attack on the veteran CPI(M) leader, accusing him of "insulting Hinduism".
KOCHI/NEW DELHI: Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday stood firm on his statement that spiritual leader and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru should not be seen as a proponent of Sanatana Dharma, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mounted an attack on the veteran CPI(M) leader, accusing him of "insulting Hinduism".
"I stand by what I have stated about Sanatana Dharma," Vijayan told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, while responding to a question on the BJP's criticism of the remarks that he had made while inaugurating the Sivagiri pilgrimage conference a day ago.
On Tuesday, Vijayan claimed that the Guru, who advocated "one caste, one religion and one God for people" had neither been a spokesperson nor a practitioner of the Sanatana Dharma.
