ABOUT 90 FISHERMEN HAVE BEEN ARRESTED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF 2025, AND OVER 10 TRAWLERS HAVE BEEN SEIZED
CHENNAI: Protests were held in the coastal town of Rameswaram in southern Tamil Nadu on Thursday after the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 10 local fishermen and seized three of their trawlers on charges of poaching the previous night.
According to officials from the Tamil Nadu fisheries department, 474 tokens were issued from the Rameswaram fish landing centre on Wednesday, and the fishermen were scheduled to return to shore by night. However, the Sri Lankan Navy's surveillance team apprehended three trawlers just past midnight, claiming that the fishermen had crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
The officials stated that the arrested fishermen were taken to the Naval Port, where they would be placed under judicial custody. Typically, the process for release on bail or significant penalties takes many days.
