In a bid to get battle-ready for challenges ahead, the Congress will decide on an action plan for the next year at its CWC meeting named "Nav Satyagraha Baithak" being held in Karnataka's Belagavi to mark the 100th anniversary of the Belgaum session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi.
In the wake of complaints, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda on Tuesday urged citizens to remain vigilant against falling victim to cybercriminals who extort money by claiming to enforce a ‘cyber arrest’.
The police have been receiving several complaints of individuals being intimidated by the concept of digital arrests, resulting in substantial financial losses.
In a recent case where a software engineer lost ₹1 crore to this scam, the commissioner clarified, "We reiterate, as we have done multiple times through various media channels, that there is no concept of digital arrests in our legal statutes or provisions. Police actions are strictly based on legal provisions; there is no provision for cyber arrest."
Regarding standard legal procedures, he stated that the police issue notices or physical summons to apprehend individuals as necessary. "If we arrest someone, they must be produced before the jurisdictional court within 24 hours, and their custody must be justified," he added.
Cyber fraudsters, he explained, falsely claim digital arrests to detain victims for days and extort money. The commissioner cautioned citizens against attending suspicious calls or falling for intimidating tactics. "If you receive suspicious calls or video messages, remain alert," he advised.
