New council leader appointed as predecessor is praised by all sides

IBERAL Democrat councillor Dan Thomas is the new leader of South Hams District Council.
The Newton and Yealmpton representative replaces Julian Brazil, who is expected to be chosen as the new leader of Devon County Council when it meets on Thursday, May 22.
Cllr Brazil resigned from his position at South Hams as he said he would not be able to both jobs, but will remain as part of the executive committee.
At a meeting of the authority on Thursday, May 15, he said it had been “an absolute privilege and honour and a real pleasure” to serve as leader for the last two years and he was proud of what had been achieved by doing politics “in a different and inclusive way, an ethos which he hoped to take to the county council.
