Syria forms independent panel to probe clashes

Syria has formed an independent committee to investigate the clashes that occurred in the coastal region, the Syrian presidency said on Sunday.
-
The clashes, which a war monitoring group said had already killed 1,000 people, mostly civilians, continued for a fourth day.
The United Nations on Sunday said reports of entire families being killed in northwestern Syria was "extremely disturbing" and it called for an immediate halt to the violence.
UN rights chief Volker Turk demanded prompt investigations into the killings and said those responsible must be held to account.
