Police nab rape-murder convict in hours after jail break

Kerala police on Friday nabbed a hardcore criminal convicted of the brutal rape and murder of a young woman on a moving train, just hours after he escaped from high security Kannur Central Prison.

According to police, Govindachamy, also known as Charley Thomas, 49, was hiding in an abandoned well at Thalappu area of Kannur district, just about two kilometres from the central jail in Pallikkunnu, when police caught up with him. Govindachamy had vanished from his cell in the early hours of Friday.

The habitual offender attempted to flee when he realised police were closing in. In a desperate move, he jumped into a well to avoid capture.

However, the police team quickly caught up and pulled him out of the well, bringing an abrupt end to the dramatic jailbreak episode.
