Kerala tops in child survival; records lowest infant mortality

Kerala has maintained its position as a leader in public healthcare by recording the lowest infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the country.
Kerala was the only one of the 21 large states which reported a single digit IMR of 5. It is second in the country after Manipur, a small state. The IMR, a key public health indicator, measures the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The dramatic decrease reflects sustained improvements in healthcare access and infrastructure development. According to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) report for 2023, issued by the Registrar General of India, the country’s IMR is plummeting to a record low of 25.
