Kerala set to challenge SC orders on school access

Kerala government decided to file a revision petition against two significant Supreme Court directives that have far-reaching implications for the state's school system - one mandating the establishment of government primary schools within specified distances and the other requiring long-serving teachers to clear the Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET) to continue in service.

Minister for General Education V Sivankutty said the state would seek a review of the Supreme Court order that directs Kerala to ensure availability of Government Lower Primary (LP) schools within a one-kilometre radius and Government Upper Primary (UP) schools within three kilometres for all students.

Addressing media persons in Trivandrum, the minister said the government is yet to receive the full judgment, and declined to comment on specific cases such as the demand for an LP school in Elambra under Manjeri Municipality.
